How to use this tool

  1. Drop an image onto the box above (or click to browse).
  2. Wait a second while the tool finds the best quality that fits the size you set.
  3. Click Download — you get a JPG at or just under the target size.

Why the size you set specifically?

Government portals, visa applications, exam registrations, job boards and company HR systems routinely reject uploads above a fixed limit — the size you set is one of the most common ceilings. The frustrating part is that phone cameras now produce 3–8 MB photos, so a document scan that looks perfectly fine gets bounced for size alone. This page exists for exactly that moment: drop the photo in, get a file back that passes the the size you set gate.

How the compressor hits the target

The tool re-encodes your image as JPEG and runs a binary search over the quality setting to find the highest quality that still fits under the size you set. If even the lowest quality is too large — which happens with very high-resolution photos — it scales the dimensions down in steps and searches again, so you always get a file at or just below the target rather than an error. Reducing pixel dimensions is what saves the most space: a 12-megapixel photo carries far more detail than any form reviewer will ever look at.

output = highest JPEG quality such that file size ≤ the size you set (dimensions reduced only if quality alone cannot get there)

What to watch for

The output is always a JPG, because JPEG is the only widely supported format that compresses photographs this aggressively. If your original has transparency (a PNG logo, a screenshot with see-through areas), the transparent parts become white. Text and line art stay legible at these sizes in almost all cases, but if the document is mostly small print, check readability in the preview before submitting it anywhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Everything on this page runs inside your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly. Your file never leaves your device — you can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads and the tool still works.

Will the compressed image still be readable?

In almost all cases yes. The tool always chooses the highest quality that fits the target, and only shrinks dimensions when quality alone is not enough. For dense small-print documents, check the preview before submitting.

Why is the download a JPG when I uploaded a PNG?

JPEG is the only mainstream format that compresses photos down to small KB targets. PNG compression is lossless and simply cannot reach these sizes for photographs.

Is there a file size limit?

No hard limit — the image is decoded by your own browser, so the practical limit is your device memory. Photos of 20-50 MB work fine on a modern laptop or phone.
