The barcode of shipping cartons

ITF-14 is the GS1 standard for marking cases and cartons that never pass a retail checkout: the code on a corrugated box of 24 units that a warehouse scans, not a cashier. It encodes a 14-digit GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) using the Interleaved 2 of 5 symbology — a digits-only format that prints well on rough surfaces like corrugated board, which is exactly why GS1 chose it for outer packaging. Many implementations add bearer bars, the thick rectangular frame around the symbol, to even out print pressure on soft carton stock.

The 14 digits are structured, not random: a packaging-level indicator digit (1–8, distinguishing e.g. a case from a pallet), the company prefix and item reference shared with the retail unit's EAN-13, and a final check digit. That last digit is the GS1 modulo-10 check — this page computes it for you, so you can enter the 13 significant digits and get the complete, valid GTIN-14.

Printing ITF-14 on cartons

Corrugated printing is unforgiving: keep magnification at the size your carton printer specifies, bars vertical relative to the flutes where possible, and contrast high. If you also need the retail-unit code for the same product, generate it on the EAN-13 page — the item reference inside both numbers is identical.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the ITF-14 check digit calculated?

With the GS1 modulo-10 algorithm: working from the rightmost of the 13 data digits toward the left, multiply alternately by 3 and 1, sum everything, and the check digit is whatever brings the total to the next multiple of 10. This page does it automatically — and verifies it if you enter all 14 digits.

What is the difference between ITF-14 and EAN-13?

EAN-13 identifies the individual retail unit scanned at checkout; ITF-14 identifies the shipping container (case, carton) holding multiple units. The GTIN-14 inside an ITF-14 shares its company prefix and item reference with the unit's EAN-13 but adds a packaging indicator digit at the front.

Can I encode letters in an ITF-14?

No — Interleaved 2 of 5 is digits-only by design. If your carton ID contains letters, the format you want is Code 128, not ITF-14.

Where do I get a GTIN-14 number?

The number must come from your GS1 company prefix so it is unique in the supply chain. This tool turns a number you already have into the barcode image; it cannot invent valid GTINs.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Everything on this page runs inside your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly. Your file never leaves your device — you can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads and the tool still works.
